Gerani

The Beach

Gerani took its name from “gerani”, a water pump used by the inhabitants to obtain water from the only water hole found in the village.

Gerani Beach is located 6 km west of Rethymno and is a bay with several pebbles on the coast. Some areas have rocks which makes the beach perfect for snorkeling. That does not affect the guests since the waters are blue and the sea inside has sand.

It is vulnerable to frequent northerly winds and is partially organized. Although it is affected by the summer winds, it is a quiet beach. It is also very close to the city of Rethymno. The perfect choice for those who prefer peaceful sea waters. Those waters are often cold from the springs located near the Bay. Something that makes swimming even more pleasant, especially in August when the temperatures are high enough.

More about Gerani

Next to the beach, there is a small port and the beautiful Church of Kamariani. Also nearby you will find two springs with fresh water. There is also the well-known cave of Gerani, full of stalagmites, stalactites, pillars, and corals! In its 6 rooms were found 3 human skeletons and several bone and stone tools of Neolithic Age. Unfortunately, far safety reasons, the cave is not open to the public.
